Outerwear Update
Nov 14, 2008

With the cooler weather upon us, we sent home a reminder about the districtwide change of the uniform policy concerning coats last week. We have found that even though the 2008-2009 Uniform Requirements are published in the Student Handbook, were sent home in both the acceptance packets and in the Parent Orientation letter, and also discussed at Parent Orientation, some parents have still been caught offguard
by the changes to the uniform policy regarding coats.

Some other concerns about uniform jackets and coats have been expressed. From what I have heard, there are three main concerns:

1) the thickness of the uniform jackets and coats
2) the cost of uniform jackets and coats, especially in this challenging economic environment
3) the quality of uniform jackets and coats.

Due to these valid concerns we have decided to make an exception for nonuniform jackets to be worn outside the building for the time being. However, please remember that only Life School uniform jackets, coats, sweaters and sweatshirts may be worn in the building. During this exception period, we will be looking for an additional vendor who will be able to provide a highquality uniform jacket/coat that is reasonable in cost and will provide adequate protection from the cold. Looking around, I would estimate that somewhere between 60-70% of students already own uniform jackets/coats. I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your continual support and a very special thanks to those parents who have already purchased uniform jackets/coats to make certain that their students remain in compliance with our uniform policy.

Sincerely,
Keith Shull
I would like to encourage all of our parents to come to the Educational Summit on November 18 th , 2008. We are inviting state representatives to answer a few questions regarding charter schools, and we want to make a lasting positive impression as they visit Life School!

There is always new legislation from year to year regarding charter schools. We want our representatives to know the success of our system, and that we are in need of equal funding to support our educational and sports venues. If they know this information, and remember seeing the strong backing from hundreds of parents, teachers, and community members, we are hoping this will be a reminder to them that there are literally thousands of parents that desire equal funding for the Life School ISD. We want our representatives to cast a positive vote for charter school initiatives, and your show of support by attending Life School’s first Educational Summit will be a big step in the right direction! I look forward to seeing you on November 18 th , 2008.
_________________________________________________________
Dear Parents:

Believe it or not, we are at the end of our second six weeks! Time is passing quickly, and we will
soon be looking at midterms and the end of our first semester. If you recall, a letter was sent in
the summer letting everyone know of some key areas of concern in our discipline plan. While
compliance has improved this year, we are still seeing some issues with dress code and tardies. In
an effort to clear any confusion and make our discipline policy in this area as clear as it can be, we
are enacting the attached discipline consequences starting with the third six weeks.
Please review these carefully. This is the plan that will be followed throughout the third six
weeks, and starting with the second semester, dress code and tardy infractions will accumulate
over the entire semester. Dress code and tardy accumulation will be separate of each other and
of Code of Conduct violations. Tallies and referrals resulting in offenses will still follow the
Consequences for Excessive Discipline found on page 44 of the Student/Parent Handbook.
Please work with us to ensure students are at school by 8:15 AM each morning and in compliance
with dress code. We are still seeing problems with backpacks, non‐uniform pants, and jackets.
Keep in mind the previous information regarding Life School coats and jackets. We are very
thankful to all of you who have supported us so far. If you have questions or concerns, let us
know.
Dear Parents and Students:
Life School takes our students’ safety very seriously. And while we welcome parents to our school as often as possible, we must observe some very important rules that were implemented with this safety in mind.
First, we must have an emergency form for every student. Office staff is currently auditing these forms to determine which ones may be missing. Parents will be contacted soon if their student’s form is not on file. If a student becomes ill or is injured while at school, we must have a means of contacting the parent or guardian. In addition, anyone who is not listed on that emergency form is not allowed to sign out a student during the school day, bring a student food, or visit with that student during lunch.
Secondly, a parent/guardian or any other individual listed on the emergency form who needs to meet with a student during the school day, drop off a lunch, or visit with a student during lunchtime must come through the school office. It is best if you come in with your hang tag and a photo I.D. Even if you come in often, there’s the possibility that we may have a substitute in the office that day.
We understand that this may inconvenience parents and students at times, but please understand the necessity of these measures. We must work together to ensure a safe, effective learning environment for all of our students.

GOOD NEWS GOOD NEWS GOOD NEWS

Southwest uniforms now has a heavier jacket option available.
All cold weather wear must be from Life School-approved vendors effective Nov 28, 2008. Prior to that date, you may purchase your student’s jacket/coat at the store locations for Southwest School Uniform Company or Parker Uniforms.
Notice of extenuating circumstances for noncompliance must be provided in writing to the campus offices no later than Friday, November 14, 2008
After November 28, 2008, dress code violations will be issued, and after four occurrences an offense will be entered into your student’s discipline file. Each additional occurrence will be considered an additional offense.
Be mindful that seven offenses in a given semester may constitute administrative grounds for dismissal from Life School for noncompliance.
