A junior, de los Santos won the District 13-AA title this year and earned his berth in the state tournament by finishing as one of the top two medalists at the recent Region II-AA competition in Stephenville.

The son of Daniel and Evelin de los Santos, Danny is coached by Michael Hirtzel.

Three Life School student-athletes will continue their athletic careers at the college level after signing a National Letter of Intent.

Life Red Oak pitcher Emily Fluitt will play for the Hill College Rebels softball team next season.  Named the District 13-AA Pitcher of the Year her senior season and First Team All-District her junior year, Fluitt plans to study psychology.  Her parents are Larry and Trish Fluitt; grandparents are Jack and Mary Ann Fluitt and Pat McBride.  The coaches of the Lady Mustangs are Rebecca Thrush and Jeff Smith.

Life School Oak Cliff football players Jerome Fellows III and Deunte Levine will both play at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville.

Fellows, an All-District 6-AA selection the past two seasons has played varsity basketball for four years.  He is the son of Jerome Fellows, Jr., and plans to study business.

Levine, an All-District 6-AA linebacker, was a captain for the Lions football team and also a regional qualifier in the 200m and 4x400m relay.  The son of Tyra and Cassandra Smith, Levine’s grandparents are Louis and Lillian Levine, Barbara Smith, and Bobby and Estella Person.  He is an active member of the Good Shepherd Baptist Church.

Both Fellows and Levine are coached by Robert Acree.

In a thank you letter to PwC, Ariel Alvizo wrote, “Thank you for letting us visit and teaching us about leadership.  I love the things that you do help your community with people volunteering.  One thing I learned was about mastering leadership and showing good character to other people and showing good communication.”

Thank you to the sixth grade teachers, Mr. Jackson, Mr. DeJesus, Mrs. Pulver and Ms. Gray for encouraging leadership in their students.  Thank you to Ms. Gray and Mrs. Calhoun for spearheading the sixth grade leadership project. Ms. Gray was a chaperone for the trip, Coach Moore did an amazing job of navigating the streets of downtown in the bus and Coach Chester arranged transportation.

Life School Red Oak high jumper Chelsi LaCour will be joined by Life Oak Cliff triple-jumper Lauren Phillips and the 4x100m Relay team of Chris Saunders, Michael Williams, Jamar Patrick and Roderick Lancaster, at the State Meet to be held May 11 in Austin on the campus of The University of Texas. Oak Cliff’s Lancaster also qualified in the 100m Dash.

Of the 42 Life School student-athletes who qualified for the Regional Meet at Stephenville’s Tarleton State University, several turned in top 10 performances:

Marking only the second time in UIL history a charter school has advanced to the state meet in One Act Play, the award-winning cast and crew will perform May 21-22 in Austin.

Senior Gracie Lott, who portrays Alice, received the Best Actress award at all 3 levels of post-season competition. Fellow cast members Joshua Reed, Averil Royal and Shawn Foulks received All-Star Cast awards and Priscilla Valdez was awarded Best Stage Manager.

The play’s director, Candace Cockerham, said that all the cast members have been involved in costume and set design. “This show is a crazy work of art. It has been pieced together from recycled materials, friendly donations, scraps and hand me downs, junk, our closets and living rooms, new materials and repurposed materials. The girls sewed more than half of the costumes and others designed the makeup and styled the wigs.”

The production has physical demands which require extra work by the cast. “We worked doing stretching and yoga to promote our flexibility, Cockerham said. “Our show is movement and stunt intensive, so this helped us go far.”

Cockerham said Life School’s vision of training leaders can be seen in the cast’s actions as well.

“Our schools promotion and vision of leadership is playing out in these OAP students’ lives. I see it in rehearsals, as they share ideas and problem solve. I see it off stage, when they say “thank you” and “yes ma’am” to the site crew or waitress. I see it onstage as they problem solve in the moment when the music doesn’t work or a prop can’t be found.”

Cockerham added that keeping everything in perspective has also been a focus for the cast and crew.

“I tell the students all the time that our joy should be in the process, not just the product, because the lessons we learn, the memories we make, and the impressions we leave will outlive and trophy or medal we receive”

The students have also seen the growth in themselves through the months of rehearsals.

“We stand out as a cast because of the way we conduct ourselves on and off stage. We have learned from our director both leadership and humility and have taken that on as a cast,” said Josh Reed.

Best Actress winner Gracie Lott added, “With the teamwork involved, we are so adaptable, we can perform on any stage, room, backyard. It’s not like any other play.”

Dear Secondary Students and Parents:

As you are aware, next week the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test will be administered to students throughout Texas.

Due to a previously scheduled Regional Track Meet scheduled on Friday, April 27, districts participating in the meet requested a change of testing date for the Social Studies section of the TAKS. The request to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) was granted.

ALL grade 10 and 11 students at the affected campus(es) will take their TAKS, TAKS (Acc), and TAKS-M social studies assessments on Monday, April 23.
