As flu season draws upon us, we need your help in tracking the number of students who have either Seasonal Flu or Type A flu (presumed H1N1). Neither Dallas or Ellis County nor our local doctors’ offices are obligated to report to our nurses, so we rely on parents for up‐to‐date information on their child. If your child has either type of flu, please call the school nurse and let them know the specific type.
Life School now has confirmed Type A flu (presumed H1N1) at multiple campuses. Extra sanitation measures are being taken on every campus, every day. The school nurse offices are equipped with masks for students with flu‐like symptoms as they wait to go home. Hand sanitizer and Kleenex have been provided for teachers to use in their classrooms. We want to keep our schools open and functioning in a normal manner during this school year, however we need your help. As stated in a previous memo, here are a few things you can do to help us get the school year started on the right foot:
- Teach your children to wash their hands with soap and water. Hand washing needs
to last 20 seconds (equivalent to your child singing Happy Birthday two times). - Teach your children not to share personal items like food or drinks.
- Teach your children to cover their coughs and sneezes using the elbow, arm, or
sleeve instead of the hand. - Know the signs and symptoms of the flu:
- Fever greater than 100.5
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Body aches
- Runny/ stuffy nose
- Headache
- Keep your child home if they are sick.
- Students may return to school when they have been fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications.
As new information is available or a change occurs in our flu plan, we will keep you informed. For the most current information and tips, please visit www.flu.gov or www.lifeschools.net .
Sincerely,
Tom Wilson, Ph. D.
