LSRO second graders competed in the campus Second Grade Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 23rd. After competing in individual class spelling bees, three students from each class qualified to participate in the final event.
Students prepared for the competition by learning and memorizing a list of 1,200 words. The hour-long competition was intense but three winners emerged.
Congratulations to the following finalists: Roman Scott, first place; Nikki Asviradam, second place; and Matthew Rutledge, third place.
First place winner, Roman Scott, said he knew the first 900 words, but at least 300 were third and fourth grade spelling words that he was unfamiliar with. Since the students did not know which words would be used in the competition, he decided he would work diligently to learn as many as possible. Roman asked his Mom, “How am I going to fit all of those words into my brain?” Then he repeated a quote he had learned, “I must be like Thomas Edison. Thomas Edison did not quit; he worked and worked until the lights he lit. So if you have a job to do, do not stop until you see it through.” Each day Roman studied the words he didn’t know. His Mom encouraged him that it did not matter if he won, only that he try his best.
In the end Roman won by spelling the word “especially,” and how fitting since he worked “especially” hard in order to win!
